Solena Materials is an Imperial College spinout using computational design, machine learning and automation to design a new class of synthetic protein-based fibres that are non-oil derived, biodegradable, customisable and high-performance. The solution offers an opportunity to revolutionise the fibre space that has been stagnant for several decades.
Replace the old website of Solena Materials with a new, modern site offering a clear and professional experience.
Showcase Solena's technology in a clear, jargon-free way that is accessible to potential clients and investors.
Ensure that the new website is scalable, allowing the Solena Materials team to make edits and expand it as the company grows.
During the project, we aimed to minimise the website’s digital carbon footprint. We chose a website platform powered by sustainable energy. The website will be created with a cleaner and well-optimised code, which lowers digital emissions.
We made sure that the website will follow best SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) practices to ensure it can be crawled and indexed by search engines (e.g. Google or Bing). We aimed to design it in a way that takes into account the relevant ranking criteria of search engines to support search engine positioning.
During each stage of the process, the client was be able to share feedback. This way, we ensured that the work progressed in a way that was best for the client.
Our team combined their business and design backgrounds to deliver a website that doesn't just 'look good', but also matches the buyer's journey and delivers business objectives.
Following the website launch, we onboarded the team members and equipped them with the ability to modify the site. This included adding articles and publications, editing text, or making other minor modifications.
We created the website using 'building blocks' that will make it easy to modify, restructure, and expand. This way, the website can scale alongside the company's growth.
The old website of Solena Materials suffered from an outdated design with a homemade 'feel'. It had a range of errors, an unintuitive structure and performed poorly. The text was jargon-heavy and difficult to understand. As a result, the website wasn't bringing in new leads or business opportunities.
The new website offers a modern, clean, and professional experience. It offers an intuitive structure that accurately showcases different areas of the Solena's work and solution. The text is accessible, and tailored to the target audience. The site has led to new business opportunities and received praise from investors and stakeholders.
We started our work by deepening our understanding of Solena Materials, their technology, ecosystem, and target audience. We conducted a series of interviews with key stakeholders and additional research. Based on the information we gathered, we developed a communications strategy which included key messages for communicating Solena's work to different audiences.
Based on the information gathered during the discovery stage, we prepared the information architecture and site structure tailored to the audience's needs and buyer journeys. We then prepared wireframes for each page to prepare information layouts that were persuasive and informative and leveraged relevant credibility-building factors.
As Solena's branding consisted only of a logo, font, and a few colours, we developed it further to create a complete visual environment. Our design team created a set of shapes, icons, and other visuals that could be then applied across the website and other marketing materials. We then used them to turn the page wireframes into complete page designs. In the process we used a clear visual hierarchy to create and intuitive and accessible website.
Once the designs were confirmed with the client, we developed the live website. To allow easy access for the Solena team and seamless future expansion and modifications we used a no-code platform offering flexibility of code. As a part of the process, we ensured that the site was responsive, scaling seamlessly across all device types and sizes, and optimised for speed and search engine performance (SEO).
